The Impact

Transforming geospatial data collection into a scalable workflow.

Our team designed an internal geospatial data tool that streamlined how Chevron’s strategy and sales teams collect, validate, and review location data across 41,000+ ZIP codes nationwide.

My contribution consisted of research and end-to-end product exploration. I helped facilitate user interviews, independently sketched the complete workflow, and owned the high-fidelity design of the Data Preview experience. I later translated our interview findings into empathy maps to further articulate users’ needs and goals.

Throughout the project, our team met weekly with Chevron stakeholders to gather feedback and refine the product. The resulting tool reduced manual work, improved data quality, and supported faster, more confident business decisions.

User Interviews

We interviewed both the primary analyst responsible for collecting location data and the downstream stakeholder who relied on it. Understanding both perspectives revealed how upstream data quality directly influenced business decisions across multiple teams.

Bridging the Gap

When data breaks down, so does decision-making.

When I revisited our interview findings through empathy mapping, a common thread became clear: every issue traced back to data quality. By improving the quality of data at the source, teams could make faster, more confident decisions downstream.

This framework kept every design decision grounded in a validated user need and gave the product a clear direction.

Competitive Analysis

Where existing tools fall short.

We evaluated the three most popular scraper tools, including Octoparse, the tool Chevron relied on at the time, to see how each performed against the features users needed most.

Comparing them revealed a consistent gap: no tool offered feedback or confirmation screens, and few gave users access to past scrapes.

The Solution

The product we designed sits between the two teams that depend on the same data: strategy analysts who collect it, and sales who act on it. It closes the gaps the existing tools left, so data reaches sales ready to use.

Looking back, this project reinforced the importance of balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints. Designing for analysts, sales teams, and stakeholders pushed us to make more intentional decisions and create a workflow that made complex data easier to review, trust, and use.
